In addition to supporting the social and emotional needs of people at risk of suicide, it is also important to make sure that dangerous items such as firearms, medications and sharp objects are safely locked up or removed from the home. People at-risk of suicide should be involved in any decisions related to home safety if possible. Involving the person at-risk in these decisions communicates respect and empowers them as a participant in their own recovery. The resources below provide information on safe storage options in order from the least to greatest intervention. People interested in learning more about this topic should consult the Means Matter website for more information on why and how to create safe environments.
Gun Locks and Safe Medication Storage
Contact Lane County Behavioral Health to access firearm and medication lockboxes.
Secure Storage
The following firearms dealers in Lane County have indicated they may have options for temporary storage of firearms during a mental health crisis (fees may apply):
Armac Tactical Junction City (541) 223-9624
Mazama Sporting Goods Eugene (541) 357-4419
McCluskey Arms Co. Eugene (541) 357-7947
The Tactical Toolbox Mapleton (541) 268-1974
295 Tactical Springfield (541) 393-6878
Self-Storage Units may be another option for firearm storage. Policies for storing firearms and/or ammunition vary by location. Contact local storage facilities for more information about options.
Extreme Risk Protection Orders
Sometimes, a person cannot participate fully in their own intervention and more needs to be done to ensure their safety and the safety of others. Extreme Risk Protection Orders can be used to remove lethal means from a person’s possession and limit their ability to purchase firearms for up to one year. If you are a family member of someone at imminent risk of suicide and living in Lane County, contact the District Attorney’s Office at 541-682-4261 for more information or to submit an application.
